The National Language Service Corp welcomes speakers of all languages to apply. Membership is open to U.S. citizens, over the age of 18, who speak English and any other language at a level of professional proficiency. Our assignments require a diverse membership to support the needs of our partners. The NLSC is looking for multilingual Americans like you. At this time NLSC cannot accept non-citizen permanent residents. We can accept U.S. citizens living abroad.

You are elgible to become a member of the NLSC, if you are over the age of 18, a U.S. citizen, fluent in English and any other language(s), and have a desire to use your language(s) in the service of others.

Yes, the NLSC offers financial compensation but only when you accept and work on an assignment to support a language need. You will be hired as a temporary federal employee and paid an hourly stipend for time spent working on an assignment, plus reimbursement for relevant travel expenses.

By joining the NLSC, you are joining a national pool of on-call volunteers who are willing to volunteer their language skills in an effort to serve the Federal Government at a time of need. You are becoming part of the U.S. governments commitment to the importance of language and cultural skills and all of its activities.

The NLSC uses the Federal Interagency Language Roundtable Proficiency Guidelines (the "ILR Scale") in speaking, reading, and listening as a basis for determining eligibility for Membership. The NLSC's goal is 3/3/3 proficiency (speaking/reading/listening) in your language and in English. Initial non-English language proficiency is assessed by asking all NLSC applicants to complete a series of self- assessments to provide an indication of where they fall on the ILR scale. Members of the NLSC will normally undergo formal proficiency testing to verify the self-assessments prior to participating in an assignment. Several factors may require formal proficiency testing, including the need for the NLSC and its partner agencies to have formally-tested Members available for assignments. English language assessment will not normally be conducted for applicants who graduated from an accredited high school and spent at least three years in the US while attending high school. If you did not do so, you will be asked to undergo the same self-assessment process as for your non-English language skills. Finally, a number of Members may be asked to undergo formal proficiency testing in English.
The NLSC does not offer language training courses. However, limited language sustainment and enhancement training is available to Members.
The NLSC estimates a very small time commitment. In most cases, less than one hour is required to complete the application package. Members who accept an assignment will most likely travel to a specific location unless working remotely. Assignments typically range in duration from one day to two weeks, but could be longer.
Member communications are made primarily via e-mail, by phone, or on NLSC Members-only platforms. For this reason, it is important to keep your contact information updated.
Yes. Most NLSC Members work full-time in various industries and professions. As assignments become available, qualifying Members will be informed and can either accept or decline the opportunities, based upon their interest and availability. It is the responsibility of the Member to make arrangements with his/her employer when taking time off from his/her job when on an assignment.

Members have access to LangNet and SCOLA for sustainment and enhancement training in dozens of languages up to an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Level IV.

  • Participation in a Wide Range of Language Assignments: Members may be selected to participate in challenging language assignments in the United States and around the world.

  • Official Language Assessment: Members who are selected to participate in an assignment have access to an Official Government proficiency test or an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

  • Subscription to The Language Compass: Explore relevant issues to NLSC membership and language speakers in our quarterly Member newsletter.

A small percentage of the membership will participate in assignments. While not on assignment, there are many ways you can contribute and participate as an NLSC Member. Members can contribute by writing articles for our quarterly Member newsletter, The Language Compass. In addition, Members are invited to attend Meet & Greet events held in various cities throughout the nation each month. These events allow Members to meet each other, network, and build a sense of camaraderie. Members also stay in touch with one another via our Members-only Facebook group. This group provides a social platform for NLSC Members to converse with one another about professional development, language sustainment resources, language-related articles, and much more! The NLSC also maintains a public presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
NLSC Members may serve in the U.S. or internationally, depending on the needs of NLSC client agencies. On occasion, assignments can be done from home. NLSC service is voluntary; therefore, it is not mandatory to accept any assignment.
NLSC Members have provided the full range of language and culture-related support to various agencies, departments and components. Assignments can range from Domestic Emergency Support, Overseas Military or Disaster Support, to providing a surge or augmentation to existing language programs for critical department and agency requirements.

Members’ support has included translation, interpretation, video and audio transcription, captioning and voice-over, exercise development and support, role playing, course development, test development, language team leading, cultural advice and training.

Members are not responsible for paying for their travel accommodation when on assignment.
Once the NLSC receives an initial request from the Government, we query our pool of federalized members to match assignment requirements to Members’ skills. At that point the NLSC makes initial contact with appropriate Members to check availability and interest in the assignment.

Note that the NLSC may contact you early in the preparation stage of an assignment. As a result, details may be limited at first.
Members who are selected for and accept an assignment are given assignment-specific training prior to starting.
Participation in any assignment is based on your availability and willingness. Declining to participate does not have any negative effects on your standing as a Member or upon future opportunities. You would be responsible for coordinating time off with your employer/school.
